Other reasons behind shelving the 1.5L diesel engine project is the rising diesel prices and the brand’s shifting focus to electrifications. In the FY21, the diesel price increased by INR 18.58 per litre. Moreover, the difference the between the price of diesel and petrol has narrowed considerably.

Maruti Suzuki had discontinued all diesel variants across its model range when the BSVI regulation came into effect in April 2020. Most of the Maruti Suzuki cars are compact, as the diesel versions are expected to receive significant price rise. Report claims that Industry experts believes that the rising buzz of electric vehicles and alternate fuels is one of the reeason to shelve a diesel engine.

Suzuki Motor Corporation has already announced its electrification strategy. The company will introduce strong hybrids, and will introduce its first electric vehicle by 2025. Not just hybrids and EVs, Maruti Suzuki will also focus on CNG as an immediate alternative fuel option to diesel cars.
