In the last couple of years, we have seen multiple electric car launches in the country. Right from Tata Nexon to MG ZS EV, there are several new options for the electric car lovers. Most of the car manufacturers have already lined-up new models for the Indian market. Here’re the upcoming new electric cars from India’s top 4 car manufacturers including Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra.
The Indo-Japanese carmaker is planning to foray into the electric vehicle space with the Maruti Suzuki WagonR EV in 2021. First announced at MOVE Summit in 2018, the new Maruti electric car will be based on the third-generation WagonR hatchback.
If reports are to be believed, the model is likely to offer a range of 150km on a full charge. It will support both standard and fast battery charger. The hatchback’s battery might be fully charged in 7 hours via a regular power socket and 1 hour (80%) via fast charger. The new Maruti electric car is likely to be priced from Rs 12 lakh (ex-showroom).
Hyundai is working on a low-cost electric mini SUV under its ‘Smart EV’ project. The model will be produced in India and is estimated to cost below Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom). It’s likely to arrive by mid 2023. Reports suggest that the upcoming Hyundai electric mini SUV will be based on a modified ICE platform. It will come with basic charging features and a decent electric range. More details of the new Hyundai electric car are likely to be revealed in near future.
Tata Motors has planned two new electric vehicles for the Indian market – the Altroz EV and HBX EV. Both models will feature Tata’s Ziptron technology that includes a permanent magnet AC motor that’s claimed to “superior performance” on demand. It also has the dust and water proof battery system meeting IP67 standards. The carmaker might introduce the updated version of the Ziptron electric powertrain in the upcoming Altroz EV hatchback and HBX EV mini SUV.
Mahindra XUV300 EV and eKUV100 will be the two upcoming electric vehicles from the home-grown carmaker. The company has already announced prices of the KUV100 electric mini SUV. Priced at Rs 8.25 lakh (ex-showroom), it will be the most affordable electric vehicle in the country. The model uses a 53bhp, 40kW electric motor and a 15.9kWh lithium-ion battery. It offers a range of 150kmph.
The Mahindra eXUV300 will be the company’s first product to be designed on the MESMA (Mahindra Electric Scalable Modular Architecture) platform. It will be offered with 40kWh and 60kWh long-range battery options providing range of over 370km and over 450km respectively. The electric version of the compact SUV will look slightly different from the standard model. The list of features, however, will be exactly similar to the ICE version.
