Two Upcoming Mahindra Thar Rivals – Jimny & Gurkha

Mahindra had launched the second generation Thar SUV in 2020. The new model has received an overwhelming response from buyers, as it currently commands a waiting period of over 11 months. It is currently the only model in the lifestyle SUV segment at a price tag of less than 20 lakh.

However, things could change in near future. Two new lifestyle SUVs under Rs 20 lakhs will be launched in the Indian market in the next couple of years. In fact, Mahindra is also preparing a long wheelbase 5-door version of the Thar SUV. The 5-door Thar is rumoured to be launched in 2022-23, and testing of the SUV is expected to commence soon.

Talking about the competition, Force Motors will soon introduce the new generation Gurkha SUV. The new Gurkha was first unveiled at the 2020 Auto Expo. On the other hand, Maruti Suzuki is preparing the new 5-door long wheelbase version of the Jimny SUV. The LWB Jimny could be branded as the new Gypsy in India, and could be launched by July 2022.

The new model is based on the new ladder-on-frame chassis. The SUV features stronger body-shell that meets the new crash test and pedestrian safety norms. It retains the overall design, except for the modern features and new front grille with retro-styled headlamps with LED DRLs. The cabin will also receive significant changes in the form of new colour scheme, dashboard design and a touchscreen infotainment system.

The new Gurkha will be powered by a BS6 compliant diesel engine that produces 90bhp of power. The lifestyle SUV will come with a 5-speed manual gearbox and 4WD (four-wheel drive) system with manual locking differentials controlled through levers. The company could also introduce the 2WD (two-wheel drive) system.

Suzuki has started testing the LWB version of the Jimny SUV in foreign soil. The new model will ride on 300mm longer wheelbase, and will be 300mm longer than the Jimny Sierra. The lifestyle SUV is reportedly to employ a more powerful 1.4-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which currently powers the international-spec Swift Sport. Suzuki could add SHVS mild hybrid system to increase the fuel efficiency. This engine churns out 127bhp of power and 235Nm of torque.

The India-spec model could use the 1.5L 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated engine that produces 102bhp of power and 130Nm of torque.  The SUV will have a wheelbase of 2,550mm, while the ground clearance stands at 210mm. It will have a kerb weight of 1190kg, which is 100kgs higher than the 3-door Sierra.
