We reported earlier that Toyota is also preparing an all-new compact electric SUV for the developing nations including India. Now, the company has released first set of pictures and details of its upcoming compact SUV. Called the Toyota Urban SUV Concept, the new electric SUV is based on an all-new Born-electric platform that underpins the Maruti Suzuki eVX EV.
The Toyota Urban SUV Concept based SUV will share lots of components and features with the Maruti eVX, and this process will help in achieving competitive pricing. Both models will share the platform, powertrain setup and interior layout along with body panels.
Toyota has confirmed that the key details of the Urban SUV electric will be revealed in 2024. The new model measures 4300mm in length, 1820mm in width and 1620mm in height. The new model is 20mm shorter in width and height compared to the EVX; however, the length is identical. Similar to the EVX, the Toyota Urban SUV Concept is expected to have a wheelbase of 2700mm.
Both SUVs will be based on an all-new skateboard platform, which will also underpin multiple Suzuki and Toyota electric vehicles. Internally called 27PL, the new skateboard platform will be derived from Toyota’s 40PL electric skateboard architecture. The eVX-based SUV will come with premium interior along with good comfort and convenience features. It will be built in India at Suzuki’s Gujarat facility for domestic as well as global markets. The company aims to produce over 1.25 lakh vehicles annually at this plant.
The overall profile is similar to the EVX concept; however, it comes with Toyota’s signature styling at the front. The Toyota Urban SUV Concept front fasica comes with C-shaped headlamps, closed-off front grille and cleaner bumper. The SUV has angular wheel arches with cladding around it, and the rear door handles are integrated on the C-pillar. At the back, the electric SUV gets a revised rear bumper and tailgate compared to the Maruti eVX.
The Toyota Urban SUV Concept is expected to be offered with front wheel and all-wheel drive options. The AWD options are likely to be introduced in the global markets. At the Auto Expo 2023, Maruti Suzuki reveal that the eVX electric SUV is fitted with a 60kWh battery pack. The same is expected to be offered on the Toyota’s electric SUV. The Urban SUV Concept is likely to offer somewhere between 400-500km of range on a single charge.
Toyota is preparing 3 electric SUVs for Europe and the Urban SUV concept based model will be one of them. The company is also preparing a new Sport crossover and a compact crossover, which are likely to be launched in the European market.
