Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) recently launched the Urban Cruiser subcompact SUV in the country. Based on Maruti Suzuki’s Vitara Brezza, the new Toyota compact SUV comes in three trims (Mid, High and Premium) priced between Rs 8.40 lakh – Rs 11.30 lakh (all, ex-showroom Delhi). We analyse the Urban Cruiser’s prices to see where it stands in the sub-4 metre SUV space that includes cars like Hyundai Venue, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and the newly-launched Kia Sonet.
Similar to the Vitara Brezza, the Toyota Urban Cruiser comes with the 105bhp, 1.5L, 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine. There is no diesel engine option. The compact SUV can be had either with a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed torque convertor automatic unit. Its manual version delivers mileage of 17.03kmpl and the automatic variant with mild hybrid technology is claimed to offer 18.76kmpl.

As we can see from the table above, the Toyota Urban Cruiser has the most expensive entry-level variant petrol variant. While the Kia Sonet petrol base model (Rs 6.71 lakh) is the least expensive in the segment, the Venue and Vitara Brezza petrol prices start at Rs 6.75 lakh and Rs 7.34 lakh respectively. Hyundai’s Venue offers the most affordable petrol-automatic variant (1.0L S AT) that costs Rs 9.65 lakh. It’s followed by the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza (Rs 9.75 lakh), Toyota Urban Cruiser (Rs 9.80 lakh) and Kia Sonet (Rs 10.49 lakh).
The fully-loaded variant of the Vitara Brezza, which has been priced at Rs 11.15 lakh, is the most affordable in the segment. The top-end trim of the Sonet and Venue can be had at Rs 11.99 lakh and Rs 11.46 lakh respectively. The Urban Cruiser Premium automatic variant comes with a price tag of Rs 11.300, thus making it more expensive than its Maruti Suzuki’s counterpart.
