Toyota Kirloskar Motor made its presence felt in the premium hatchback segment by launching the Glanza, which is a rebadged version of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. In return, Maruti Suzuki recently introduced its first rebadged Toyota vehicle, the Invicto premium MPV, featuring minor cosmetic changes and a robust hybrid powertrain. Looking ahead, Toyota has ambitious plans to bring two more rebadged Maruti UVs (utility vehicles) by the end of this year. One of these models, based on the Maruti Ertiga MPV, is expected to arrive in August 2023. The other product will be a rebadged version of the Maruti Fronx compact crossover, likely hitting showrooms during this year’s festive season. Toyota Rumion
Toyota’s version of the Ertiga, known as the Rumion, is already available in the South African market. While minimal changes are anticipated for its front end, the Rumion will feature a grille resembling the Innova Crysta, along with a revised bumper and fog lamp assembly. The MPV will also sport a new set of alloy wheels. The interior layout will be nearly identical to the Ertiga, but the Rumion will have a blacked-out dashboard with different insets. Additionally, it might come with new black upholstery instead of the beige one. Under the hood, the Rumion will use the same 1.5L, 4-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine sourced from the Maruti Ertiga, capable of producing a claimed power of 103bhp and 137Nm of torque. Transmission choices will include a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic unit.
Toyota Compact Crossover
Toyota will also introduce a sub-4 meter SUV based on the Fronx platform, competing against rivals such as the Tata Punch and the newly-launched Hyundai Exter. The official name and details of this model are yet to be revealed. While it will bear some new design elements, the new Toyota mini SUV is expected to have a similar appearance to the Maruti Fronx. It is likely to feature Toyota’s familiar grille, along with slightly updated front and rear bumpers and new alloy wheels. Inside, there may be new trim and upholstery options. The engine setup will remain unchanged, with power derived from the 1.2L naturally aspirated petrol and 1.0L Boosterjet turbo petrol engine options.
