Top 5 Safest SUVs Of India – Global NCAP Rating

Global NCAP is conducting crash tests of cars under its #SaferCarsForIndia programe. The crash tests show Made-in-India SUVs capability to keep passengers and driver safe during collision or accident. The GNCAP has also upgraded its assessment requirements with the additions of side impact test and electronic stability control (ESC) capability.

In the latest GNCAP test, Made-in-India cars are tested in 4 different ways – frontal offset test at 64kmph, a side impact test at 50kmph and a side pole impact at 29kmph, and ESC performance. In this article, we bring you a list of top 5 safest SUVs by Global NCAP.

The locally developed MQB AO IN based VW Taigun and Skoda Kushaq are officially the safest made-in-India SUVs. Both SUVs are recently tested under the upgraded GNCAP crash tests. The Taigun and Kushaq have received 5 star crash test rating for adult as well as child protection. In fact, these two SUVs are the first to score maximum points & full 5 star in child protection crash test.

Both SUVs have scored 29.64 points out of a total of 34 in adult protection, and 42 points out of the maximum 49 in child protection test by GNCAP. The footwell area was rated as stable. The bodyshell was rated as stable and it is capable of withstanding further loadings. ESC meets the fitment rate requirements and the performance was acceptable according to Global NCAP’s latest requirements.

2. Tata Punch

The homegrown automaker, Tata Motors had launched the Punch small SUV in the country in 2021. The small SUV has been one of the best-selling models in its segment. Before Taigun & Kushaq, the Punch was the safest made-in-India car rated by Global NCAP. It was tested before the upgraded GNCAP assessment programe was introduced. The small SUV scored 16.45 points out of a total of 17 points in the adult protection and 40.89 points out of 49 in child protection test.

The small SUV scored 5 star crash test rating in adult protection and 4 star crash testing in child protection. The bodyshell was rated as stable and it was capable of withstanding further loadings. Footwell area was rated as stable.

3. Mahindra XUV300

The Mahindra XUV300 is the 3rd model in our list of top 5 safest SUVs of India. It scored 5 star crash test rating for adult protection and 4 star in child safety by global NCAP. The compact SUV is based on SsangYong’s sourced X100 platform that underpins the global-spec Tivoli SUV. It received 16.42 points out of 17 in the adult protection and 37.44 points out of the total of 49 points in child protection. The bodyshell was rated as stable and it was capable of withstanding further loadings.

4. Mahindra XUV700

XUV700 Crash Test

The hugely popular XUV700 mid-sized SUV is one of the safest SUVs on sale in our market. It has received 16.03 points out of maximum 17 in adult protection and 41.66 points out of 49 in child protection. Global NCAP rated its bodyshell stable and it is capable of withstanding further loadings. Footwell area was also rated as stable. It scored 5 stars in adult protection and 4 stars in child protection.

5. Tata Nexon

The Nexon was the first made-in-India SUV or car to receive full 5 star crash test rating by Global NCAP. It scored 16.06 points out of 17 in adult protection test and 25 points out of 49 in child protection. The SUV has received 5 star rating in adult protection and 3 star in child protection test.
