With the significant rise in fuel prices, buyers in India are now looking at fuel efficient petrol or CNG cars. Moreover, automakers are also working hard to make their petrol engines more fuel efficient. Maruti Suzuki’s petrol engines are fuel efficient, and the efficiency further increased with the inclusion of a mild hybrid system.

In this article, we talk about the most fuel efficient Maruti Suzuki cars on sale in the country. The list is based on official ARAI Certified fuel efficiency figures, as the actual figures are expected to be different based on the driving conditions and styles.

1. Maruti Suzuki Celerio – (26.68kmpl AMT & 25.24kmpl MT)

The second generation Maruti Suzuki Celerio is currently the most fuel efficient petrol car in the country. It is available in a single 1.0L 3-cylinder petrol engine with manual and AMT gearbox options. This DualJet K10 engine churns out 67bhp of power and 89Nm of torque.

The new model is based on Suzuki’s lightweight HEARTECT platform, which also plays an important role in improving its efficiency. The manual version is offered in LXi, VXi, ZXi and ZXi+ variants, offering 25.24kmpl (ZXi+ – 24.97kmpl). The Celerio VXi AMT returns 26.68kmpl, while the ZXi and ZXi+ AMT return 26kmpl.

Maruti Suzuki is currently the best selling sedan in the Indian market. The sedan is also the most fuel efficient in its category with an ARAI certified fuel economy of 24.12kmpl. It is offered with 1.2L Dualjet petrol engine producing 90bhp and 113Nm. With manual version, it return an ARAI certified fuel economy of 23.26kmpl.

The Baleno hatchback is offered with 2 engine options – a 1.2L Dualjet with a mild hybrid system and a 1.2L NA petrol. While the former is good for 90bhp and 113Nm, the later produces 83bhp and 113Nm. A 5-speed manual gearbox is offered as standard, while a CVT is available with 83bhp, 1.2L NA engine.

With mild hybrid system, the Baleno offers an ARAI certified mileage of 23.87kmpl. The regular petrol manual and CVT deliver 21.01kmpl and 19.56kmpl respectively.

India’s most popular hatchback, the Swift shares the 90bhp, 1.2L dualjet petrol engine + idle start stop system with the Dzire. The manual version is claimed to deliver 23.2kmpl, while the AMT return a certified mileage of 23.76kmpl.

5. Maruti Alto – (22.05kmpl MT & 31.59km/kg CNG)

Maruti’s most affordable and India’s best selling entry-level car, the Alto offers an ARAI certified fuel economy of 22.05kmpl. It is offered with a 48bhp, 796cc 3-cylinder petrol egine with a 5-speed manual gearbox. It also gets a CNG variant that offers slightly less power and torque – 41bhp and 60Nm respectively. The CNG variant offers an impressive mileage of 31.59 km/kg.
