This Diwali season, the Indian automotive industry clocked a total of 3,36,398 units registering 29 percent growth over last year and nearly one out of every two cars sold was SUV. Maruti Baleno Cross
Maruti Baleno Cross will be the next big addition to the Indo-Japanese SUV product portfolio. The model will make its global debut at the Delhi Auto Expo in January 2023. It’s likely to hit showrooms in the first half of next year. Based on the Heartect platform, the compact will come with the BS6-compliant Boosterjet turbo petrol engine benefited with the mild hybrid tech. Hyundai Micro SUV
The South Korean automaker might unveil an all-new entry-level SUV at the 2023 Auto Expo. Its market launch is reported to happen ahead of 2023 festive season. Codenamed Hyundai Ai3 CUV, the model will share its platform with the Grand i10 Nios hatchback. It will be slightly bigger than the Hyundai Casper that’s sold in select global markets. Under the hood, the micro SUV might feature a 1.2L NA petrol engine that’s good for 82bhp and 114Nm. Once launched, the new Hyundai micro SUV will take on directly on the Tata Punch along with the Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger. It’s likely to be priced around Rs 5.50 lakh for the base model. Honda Compact SUV
Honda has confirmed two SUVs for the Indian market, based on the Amaze platform. One of them will be a mid-size SUV that will be put up against the Hyundai Creta and one will be a compact SUV that will take on the new Maruti Brezza, Kia Sonet and Hyundai Venue. If reports are to be believed, the new Honda compact SUV could be offered with the strong hybrid tech. The model will also be made available with a 1.5L i-VTEC petrol engine sourced from the City sedan. Some of its design elements and features could be inspired by the newly-launched Honda WR-V. New-Gen Tata Nexon
Tata Motors is reported to give a generation to its top-selling Nexon subcompact SUV in coming years. Its launch timeline, however, is yet to be revealed. One of the major updates will be made to its underpinning. The new-generation Tata Nexon will be based on the Alfa platform that supports different body styles and powertrains (including pure electric and hybrid). It’s the same architecture that underpins the Altroz and Punch in India. For power, the all-new Nexon is likely to use the 1.2L turbo petrol and 1.5L turbo diesel engines.
