India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, who is on a state visit to the United States, met Tesla’s boss, Elon Musk. After the meeting, the American electric car manufacturer confirmed that it would make a “significant investment” in India. The company will “explore opportunities in India for investments in electric mobility and the rapidly expanding commercial space sector.”

Musk said, “I am confident that Tesla will be in India and will do so as soon as humanly possible.” The company is “trying to figure out the right timing.” He called himself a “fan of Mr. Modi” and said that India had “more promise than any other large country in the world.”

Globally, Tesla sells four electric car models, including the Model 3, Model Y, Model X, and Model S. In India, the company is likely to introduce the Tesla Model 3 electric sedan and Model Y electric crossover. The global-spec Model 3 comes with single and dual motor options. Its RWD Standard Range Plus variant promises a range of 423km and is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100kmph in under 6 seconds. The dual motor Long Range AWD version offers a range of 568km and achieves 0 to 100kmph in under 4.5 seconds. The electric sedan’s Performance variant can reach a maximum speed of over 260kmph.
