Tata Tigor Electric With Nexon’s Ziptron Powertrain; More Power, Range

Tata Motors has released a new video, which shows the brand’s upcoming electric car. It is basically the revised version of the Tata Tigor Electric. Tata Motors had launched the Tigor EV for government authorities and fleet buyers, and in 2019, the electric sedan was introduced for private buyers. The previous model had limited range and low performance, which makes it not relevant for private buyers.

The new Tata Tigor Electric will come with Ziptron powertrain, which is previewed in a teaser video. The Ziptron powertrain is currently offered with the Nexon EV, which is India’s best-selling electric vehicle. The company has recently re-branded the old Tigor EV as the Xpres-T for the fleet buyers. The facelifted model features the same 72-volt architecture and 21.5kWH battery pack.

With new Ziptron powertrain, the Tata Tigor Electric promises to give better performance and high range, and will mainly target private buyers. The compact electric sedan is covered in thick cloth; however, it shows some design changes. It will have electric blue hues for the wheels and projector headlamps with LED DRLs (Daytime Running Lamps). The Xpres-T is offered in white colour, and features steel wheels sporting plastic covers.

The Tata Tigor EV is likely to share the battery and electric motor with the Nexon. The Ziptron powered vehicles has a 300+ volt permanent magnet synchronous electric motor instead of 72V AC induction-type motor on the Xpres-T. The Nexon EV features a larger 30.2 kWh lithium-ion battery, which is likely to be offered on the Tigor EV as well. While Xpres-T is claimed to offer a range of 213km, the Tigor EV could offer a range of over 300km on single charge. Tata Motors has already announced that the Ziptron vehicles will have a minimum range of 250kms.

The electric motor in the Tigor EV is likely to produce around 120bhp and 240Nm of torque, which should improve its 0-100kmph acceleration. The sedan should offer a top speed of over 100kmph. The sedan will come with fast charging option with battery to charge up to 80% from 0 in less than 1 hour. The sedan could get the CCS2 charging as standard, which will give it access to India’s rapidly expanding EV fast-charging network.

The new Tata Tigor Electric is expected to be priced around Rs 10 lakh to Rs 12 lakh, undercutting the Nexon EV. The Tata Nexon EV is currently available in the price bracket of Rs 13.99 lakh to Rs 16.85 lakh. It is expected to be launched in the next few days.
