Tata Sierra EV To Underpin New Sigma Platform – Lighter & More Efficient

Tata Motors has planned to expand its electric vehicle (EV) product portfolio in the next 5 years. The plan outlines 10 new models including Altroz EV, Punch EV, updated Nexon EV, Nexon Coupe EV, Sierra EV and more. The automaker will use three different platforms for its upcoming electric cars – a converted IC engine platform, new Sigma architecture and a skateboard. These architectures will be introduced in a phased manner.

The converted IC engine platform has already been used in the Tata Nexon EV and the newly-launched Tigor EV. The former is ready to receive an update this year. The 2022 Nexon EV will come with slightly updated styling, a larger batter pack and offer longer range. The upcoming Tata Nexon Coupe EV, which is due for 2023, will underpin the same architecture. In converted IV engine platform, the automaker slightly modified the vehicles’ existing platform and accommodated the battery pack and electric motor into the available space.

Tata’s new, electric-only Sigma platform has been designed for the brand’s future models. It’s essentially based on the Alfa platform, but heavily modified for electrification. In order to accommodate electric powertrain, the automaker has modified its fuel tank area, remove transmission tunnel and pushed the side members for creating a flat floor for battery pack. Compared to the converted IC engine platform, the Sigma-based EVs are expected to be lighter, more energy efficient and more spacious. The upcoming Tata Sierra EV will be the first vehicle to underpin the Sigma platform.

Talking about the new skateboard, the architecture has been purely designed and developed for electric vehicles. Though, the skateboard based EVs will take a few years to hit roads. Usually, the skateboards have longer wheelbase to accommodate large battery pack between the front and rear axles. Therefore, Tata’s first skateboard based vehicle is likely to be a big SUV.

More details on the upcoming Tata electric cars will be revealed in near future. Stay tuned to IndiaCarNews.
