5 Upcoming Tata Electric Cars In India – Sierra To Punch EV

Buoyed by excellent response for Nexon and Tigor EVs, Tata Motors is now planning to increase its electric portfolio in the country. In this article, we talk about the list of top 5 upcoming new Tata electric cars and electric SUVs in the country –

Updated Tata Nexon EV

The homegrown automaker, Tata Motors is preparing an updated version of the Nexon electric. It will receive a new variant, which offers a longer range. The new model will have improved brakes and few design changes. The outgoing model is equipped with Tata’s Ziptron EV powertrain technology that has a 30.2kWh battery pack. This powertrain offers 127bhp of power and 245Nm of torque. The battery comes with a standard warranty of 8 years. The 2022 Tata Nexon electric’s long range variant is expected to be launched by mid-2022. It is likely to be fitted with a 40kWh battery pack and is estimated to offer a maximum range of around 400km on a single charge. The long-range variant will rival the MG ZS EV, which offers a certified range of 412kms.

Tata Motors will launch the electric version of the Altroz hatchback in 2022. It is likely to be powered by the same electric powertrain that does duty in the Nexon EV. Though, its battery capacity and power figures might be different. The Nexon EV uses an IP67 certified 30.2kWh battery pack with a permanent magnet AC motor. The battery pack is expected to deliver a range around 250km-300km. Its battery might take 60 minutes to get charged up to 80% with DC fast charging and 8 hours to get fully charged with a regular power socket.

Expected to be launched in 2022, the Tata Punch EV is likely to be the brand’s cheapest electric model in our market. It will use the Ziptron EV powertrain technology that powers the Nexon EV. The micro SUV is likely to use a 30.2kWh lithium-ion battery pack powering a 129bhp, electric motor mounted on the front axle. The Nexon EV offers a claimed range of 312km on a single charge. The Punch based EV is likely to come with the updated electric powertrain offering an expected range of over 300km. Its power and torque outputs will stand at 100PS and 200NM respectively.

Tata Motors is working on a bigger, all-electric coupe version of the Nexon. This model will also be offered with petrol and diesel engine options. It will be based on the same X1 platform that underpins the Nexon. The coupe SUV will first come as a pure electric vehicle.  Details about the powertrain are yet to be revealed; however, it is likely to get a larger 40kWh battery pack with range over 400kms. The new model will enjoy the tax benefits offered on all electric vehicles, a flat 5 percent GST.

Tata Motors is all set to re-introduce the iconic Sierra nameplate in the country. It will be Tata’s first stand-alone EV-only model, and the first to be based on the new ‘Born Electric’ platform. It will be a born-electric product and will be developed as an EV. The production version of the Sierra Electric Vehicle will feature a conventional five-door layout.

It will be based on the dedicated Sigma platform, which is based on the ALFA platform. Tata engineers will re-engineered the platform around the battery pack to oprimise packaging. These modifications will include the deletion of the transmission tunnel, modification of the fuel tank area and the side members. The new Sigma platform will be lighter, more efficient and more spacious than the ICE platform-based EVs.
