Tata Plans To Launch 10 New Electric Cars In India By 2025

Tata Motors has some futuristic plans for the Indian market. During addressing to the shareholders in the 76th Annual Report, N Chandrasekaran chairman of Tata Motors, has revealed that the company aims to launch 10 new battery-electric vehicles (BEV) by 2025. The home-grown carmaker will proactively invest to set up charging infrastructure across the country. In order to secure its battery supply chain, Tata Group is currently exploring partnerships in cell and battery manufacturing in India and Europe.

At present, Tata has two electric vehicles in its product portfolio – Nexon EV and Tigor EV. Both models have a combined market share of 77%. In fact, the Tata Nexon EV is the top-selling electric vehicle in the country. Since its launch in January 2020, the carmaker sold over 4,000 units of the compact electric SUV. It comes in three variants – XM, XZ+ and XZ+ Lux – priced at Rs 13.99 lakh, Rs 15.56 lakh and Rs 16.56 lakh respectively. Recently, the model received two minor updates – newly-designed 5-spoke alloy wheels and an updated infotainment system.

While the details of the upcoming new Tata electric cars are yet to be revealed, the lineup will include the Altroz EV and HBX-concept based EV. The Tata Altroz EV was first previewed at the 2020 Auto Expo. Its launch is likely to happen in early 2022. The carmaker will also bring in the electric iteration of the upcoming HBX concept based mini SUV that’s due for this year’s festive season.

The new Tata electric cars are likely to feature the brand’s updated Ziptron technology. In Nexon EV, the electric powertrain includes a 30.2kWh lithium-ion battery powering a 129bhp, permanent magnet AC motor. Its torque stands at 245Nm. The electric setup is claimed to offer a range of over 312km on a full charge. The battery capacity and electric range of the new Tata EVs are likely to be different than the Nexon EV.
