Tata Motors is planning to expand its EV (electric vehicle) product range in coming years. Speaking to ET Auto, Shailesh Chandra, President for Passenger Vehicles Business of Tata Motors, has revealed that the company plans to invest Rs 15000 crore in the EV segment in the next five years. Currently, the Tata Nexon EV has been ruling the EV space in the country. The home-grown automaker aims to develop around 10 new electric cars across different segments. These models will come with multiple driving range options.
While details of the upcoming Tata electric cars are yet to be revealed, the range is likely to include the Altroz EV, Punch EV, a new Coupe SUV EV and Sierra EV. Currently, the company is gearing up to launch the long-range Tata Nexon EV with the updated Ziptron EV powertrain. The new model will feature a 40kWh battery pack (instead of the existing 30.2kWh unit) delivering range around 400km on a single charge. It’s likely to arrive by mid 2022.
The next electric car to come out from Tata’s stable will be the Altroz EV. The electric hatchback is likely to use the same updated Ziptron technology that will debut on the 2022 Nexon EV. Though, its battery capacity and power output could be different. The model will support both regular and DC fast charging. Speculations are on rife that the home-grown automaker is working on the electric version of the Tata Punch mini SUV.
Tata Motors aims to enter into the niche Coupe SUV segment with an all-new model. It’s expected to be designed on the Nexon’s X1 platform and come with petrol, diesel and electric powertrain options. The new Tata Coupe SUV will be the brand’s first pure electric vehicle in the country. The all-new Tata Sierra SUV, that was previewed as EV concept at the 2020 Auto Expo, will be the company’s first production model to be based on the new ‘Born Electric’ platform.
