Tata Motors Betting Big On EVs – Future Plans Revealed

With the government’s plan to go fully electric by 2030, car manufacturers are getting ready to expand their EV product portfolio in India. Currently, Tata Motors is leading the race with its three electric models – Nexon EV (Max and Prime), Tigor EV and Tiago EV. In May 2023, the home-grown automaker witnessed a growth of 66 percent with sales of 5,805 units of the electric cars in both domestic and global markets. In the same period last year, the company recorded total EV sales of 3,505 units.

According to Tata’s annual report, the company aims to increase its EVs’ sales contribution to 25 percent from 12 percent by the end of 2027 and to 50 percent by 2030. Recently, Tata Motors announced that its EV sales breached the 50,000 annual sales mark with 12 percent contribution to its total sales in the March quarter.

For fiscal year 2024, the carmaker’s major aim is to achieve significant sales growth while investing for future plans and maintaining market competitiveness. Furthermore, it will expand its EV sales and after-sales network and charging infrastructure across the nation.

Tata Motors had confirmed its plan to launch 10 electric vehicles in the next 4-5 years. There will be at least seven major electric car launches including Tata Punch EV, Tata Altroz EV, Tata Curvv EV, Tata Avinya EV, Tata Sierra EV, Tata Safari EV and Tata Harrier EV. The electric iteration of the Punch is likely to hit roads in the second half of 2023.

The Harrier EV, which was showcased in its concept avatar at the 2023 Auto Expo, will underpin Tata’s Gen 2 (aka Sigma) platform. The upcoming Tata electric cars will be based on three platforms – a converted ICE, a bespoke Sigma or Gen 2 and a skateboard (Born electric/Gen 3) architecture.
