Tata Motors Beats Mahindra, Kia; Registered 154% Growth

Tata Motors has recorded total sales of 18,583 units in August 2020, becoming India’s third largest car manufacturer for the third consecutive month. Mahindra & Mahindra and Kia Motors India that registered sales of 13,651 units and 10,853 units respectively, have been outsold by Tata with a significant margin. The home-grown carmaker sold 7,316 units in the same month last year, accounting a growth of 154%. While the model-wise sales figures are yet to be revealed, the Harrier and Nexon are supposed to be major sales contributors.

In order to further boost its sales, Tata Motors is planning to launch a new variant of the Nexon subcompact SUV. The carmaker recently released a teaser confirming the launch date of the new model. Reports suggest it could be the Tata Nexon DCT (dual-clutch transmission) that was caught testing multiple times. The new automatic variant will feature a 7-speed DT-1 dual-clutch gearbox that said to be designed for the compact cars.

2020 Tata Harrier Review

Sourced from Punch, the new automatic unit will be more refined and efficient than the existing AMT gearboxes. The Nexon DCT might be offered with the BS6 1.2L turbocharged petrol engine that’s good enough for 118bhp and 170Nm. The compact SUV also comes with a 1.5L diesel motor pushing out 108bhp and 260Nm of torque. Currently, the model lineup can be had either with a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed AMT gearbox.

The carmaker will also introduce the new DCT gearbox on the Harrier SUV and Altroz premium hatchback. While the former will be offered with the new 150bhp, 1.5L direct-injection petrol motor, the latter one will receive it with a 99bhp, 1.2L turbo-petrol engine. Recently, the Tata Tiago with turbo-petrol engine was spotted testing by Bosh engineers in Bangalore. It’s likely to get a 1.2L, 3-cylinder turbo engine making 99bhp with 141Nm.
