Suzuki Jimny 5-Door To Be Released This Year: New Details

Japanese automaker, Suzuki has started testing the long-wheelbase version of the Jimny off-roader. The SUV has recently been snapped in Europe, which reveals some of the design highlights. According to media reports, the new Suzuki Jimny 5-door model will be released in the global markets in the second half of 2021.

The Suzuki Jimny 5-door model will have slightly different design compared to the existing 3-door model. It is expected that Suzuki will give a midlife makeover to the Jimny line-up, which will also inspire the design of the 5-door model. Majority of the changes will be made to the front profile, which will receive changes in-line with brand’s new global design philosophy. The SUV is likely to receive revised bumpers, grille, wheels and headlamps. However, the SUV will retain the original design of the Jimny. The interior is likely to receive updated multimedia system and new graphics in the instrument console.

Leaked documents reveal that the 5-door Suzuki Jimny will be based on the Sierra. It will ride on 300mm longer wheelbase, and the length will be raised by 300mm. The off-roader will measure  3,850mm in length, 1,645mm in width and 1,730mm in height. The SUV will have a wheelbase of 2,550mm, while the ground clearance stands at 210mm. It will have a kerb weight of 1190kg, which is 100kg heavier than the 5-door model.

The 5-door Jimny will have an elongated body, which will help automaker to add forward-facing second row of seats. Adding to it, the boot space will be increased significantly. The current 3-door model offers a wheelbase of 85-litres. It will be powered by a 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine that produces 102bhp of power and 138Nm of torque. It is likely to feature the brand’s smart hybrid fuel saving technology. For transmission duties, the engine will be paired to a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed torque convertor automatic.

The SUV won’t qualify for the lower excise duties on offer in the sub-4 meter category, as it features a bigger capacity engine. The Suzuki Jimny 5-door is expected to be launched in our market in 2021. Likely to be cost around Rs 10 lakh, the Jimny will rival the Mahindra Thar and the Force Gurkha.
