Suzuki has started working on the long-wheelbase version of the Jimny SUV, which has been caught testing in foreign soil. The company will introduce the 5-door version of the SUV, as most of the details about the dimensions and engine specifications have been leaked online. Longer Wheelbase
According to the leaked document, the 5-door Maruti Suzuki Jimny will measure 3,850mm in length, 1,645mm in width and 1,730mm in height. The SUV will have a wheelbase of 2,550mm, while the ground clearance stands at 210mm. It will have a kerb weight of 1190kg. Commpared to the 3-door model, the 5-door Jimny is 300mm longer and 100kgs heavier. Adding to it, the SUV rides on 300mm longer wheelbase.
Based On Jimny Sierra
The India-spec model will be based on the Jimny Sierra, which was showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo. The Sierra is slightly longer, wider and taller than the global-spec Jimny crossover. The regular model measures 3,395mm in length, 1,475mm in width, and 1,725mm in height, and offers a ground clearance of 205. However, both SUVs get the same wheelbase of 2,250mm.
Petrol Engine with 4×4 system
The 5-door Maruti Suzuki Jimny will be powered by a 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine that will produce around 102bhp of power, which is similar to the Jimny Sierra on sale in Japan. It is expected to feature Maruti’s smart hybrid fuel saving tech. Transmission options will include a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed torque convertor automatic. With 1.5-litre petrol engine, the 5-door Jimny won’t qualify for the lower excise duties on offer in the sub-4 meter category.
What’s New?
Suzuki is preparing a mid-life facelift for the 3-door Jimny, and the similar changes are expected on the 5-door Suzuki Jimny. The new model will look identical to the existing model; however, it will receive extended rear overhangs and longer body. The SUV is likely to offer forward facing third row of seats, which will make it a 5-seater SUV.
The all-new Maruti Suzuki Jimny will be designed and developed on the ladder-frame chassis. The new model will come with host of comfort and convenience features like touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, satellite navigation, dual airbags, ABS with EBD, lane departure warning, vehicle stability control, and brake enabled limited slip differential system and reverse parking camera.
India Launch & Competition
Maruti Suzuki is yet to make an official announcement on the same; however, previous media reports suggest that the new Suzuki Jimny 5-door could be launched by July 2022. The SUV will be positioned against the likes of the Mahindra Thar and the upcoming Force Gurkha SUV.
