Suzuki Australia Wants Made-In-India Grand Vitara – Report

Maruti Suzuki has confirmed that the new Grand Vitara 5-seater SUV will be unveiled on July 20, 2022. The new model will come with segment-first four-wheel-drive system. A new media report claims that Suzuki Australia is pushing Japan hard to bring the new Grand Vitara in for the Australian market.

The new Grand Vitara has been developed by Suzuki; however, it will be produced at Toyota’s manufacturing facility in Bidadi, Karnataka. In fact, Toyota will soon launch its own version of the Grand Vitara called the Urban Cruiser HyRyder. The new model will be powered by 1.5-litre mild hybrid and 1.5-litre strong hybrid engines, and the former will be available with all-wheel-drive setup.

Suzuki was selling the old Grand Vitara in Australia between 1999 and 2018. It was offered with both two-and four-door bodies. Thanks to the compact body, an off-road-ready chassis and low-range gearing, the Grand Vitara was hugely popular among Australian customers.

The new Suzuki Vitara is basically a city SUV targeting young buyers who want higher seating position and all-wheel-drive capabilities. The Suzuki Jimny is also on sale in Australia. It is smaller and more rugged model. Suzuki is also developing a 5-door version of the Jimny, which has recently been caught testing in Europe.

Maruti Suzuki has started accepting pre-orders for the new Grand Vitara at a token amount of Rs 11,000. The new model will be sold through NEXA premium dealership network. The SUV will take on the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, MG Astor, VW Taigun and the Skoda Kushaq. It is based on Suzuki’s Global-C platform that underpins the new Brezza, S-Cross & the global Vitara.

The SUV will come with two engine options – a 1.5L K15C dualjet petrol with mild hybrid & a Toyota’s 1.5L TNGA Atkinson cycle petrol with strong hybrid tech. The former is good with 101bhp and 137Nm, and will come with 5-speed manual & a 6-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox. The 1.5L Atkinson cycle engine produces 92bhp and 122Nm. It is coupled to an electric motor that offers 79bhp and 141Nm. The combined power output stands at 117bhp and 141Nm of torque.  It features a 177.6V lithium-ion battery and claims to offer an electric only range of up to 25km. It will be paired to a Toyota’s e-drive transmission.
