Skoda Auto India has recently trademarked several new names in India. The company has also trademarked the Slavia nameplate, which is likely to be the name for the next-gen Skoda Rapid sedan. Skoda has already announced that the Rapid replacement will arrive in the end of 2021.
The next-gen Skoda Rapid will be based on the heavily-localised MQB AO IN platform, which will also underpin the Vision IN concept based mid-sized SUV and the Volkswagen Taigun. The sedan will share most of the interior components and features from the Vision IN SUV. To be introduced as a notchback, the upcoming Skoda Slavia will take on the likes of the Honda City, Hyundai Verna and the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz.
The upcoming Skoda Slavia will be powered by a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which currently powers the VW Polo, Vento and the Skoda Rapid. This engine is capable of producing 115bhp of power and 200Nm of torque. Transmission choices will include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic.
The next-gen Skoda Rapid’s styling will be inspired by the flagship new Superb sedan. The notchback will have balanced proportions, sharp edges and vibrant design elements. It will have hexagonal radiator grille and new arrow-shaped headlights, which shows the brand’s new design language. Some of the design highlights will include arrow-shaped LED headlamps, diamond cut alloys and LED tail-lamps.
