Japanese automaker, Suzuki has started working on the next-gen Alto and the Vitara SUV for the domestic market. The current generation model was introduced in December 2014 and is already 6 years old in Japan. The report claims that the next-gen Suzuki Alto will be based on a lightweight platform.

The 9th generation Suzuki Alto will be equipped with a new R06D type engine, which will be a 658cc engine producing 48bhp. The company is also reportedly working on a sportier version of the Alto hatchback, which is rumoured to be unveiled in October 2021.

The next-gen Suzuki Alto Sport model will receive a turbocharged engine, new interior and exterior. It is claimed to offer sporty driving experience. The current R06A type engine will be tweaked to form the new turbocharged R06D type engine. This turbocharged unit will have different bore, while the stroke has a longer stroke. This improves the torque characteristics in the middle speed range and improves fuel efficiency and response.

Not just new Alto, Suzuki will also introduce the next-gen Vitara SUV (Escudo in Japan) by January 2021. The new model is rumoured to be unveiled in October 2020. It will receive a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a 48V mild hybrid system. Adding to it, the SUV will also receive a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine.

Maruti Suzuki is also reportedly working on an all-new entry-level car, which will replace the existing Alto in India. The new model is expected to be launched in 2021. The India-spec next-gen Alto is likely to be based on the HEARTECT platform that also underpins the S-Presso and the Wagon R hatchback. The next-gen Maruti Suzuki Alto will be powered by a 796cc, 3-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine that is capable of producing 48bhp of power and 69Nm of torque. Transmission choices will include a 5-speed manual and an AMT.
