New Toyota Hybrid 3-Row MPV India Launch By Year-End – Report

It is no secret that Toyota and Suzuki joint venture is preparing a wide range of new models for India as well as global markets. A new media report claims that a new Toyota hybrid MPV will be launched in the Indian market before the end of 2022 or early next year. It is reportedly to be called the Toyota Innova HyCross or the Innova Zenix. In fact, the Innova HyCross name has already been trademarked in India.

The Japanese automaker is betting big on full hybrid technology to drive sales in the Indian market. The company plans to localise the hybrid powertrains at its production facilities by sourcing local materials. Toyota will also benefit from Maruti Suzuki’s expertise in mild hybrid technology and low-cost engineering.

The new Toyota Hybrid MPV will be a completely different from the Innova Crysta, which will continue to sell in our market. Instead of the ladder-frame chassis & RWD layout, the new model will be based on a new modern, monocoque, front-wheel-drive set-up. It is reportedly to be based on the Toyota’s global TNGA-C or GA-C (Global Architecture).

The new Toyota Hybrid MPV is reportedly to have a wheelbase of around 2,850mm, which is 100mm longer than the current Innova Crysta. It is likely to receive a more modern, crossover-ish profile and is expected to share design highlights with the new Veloz MPV. Due to the monocoque architecture, the new Innova Hybrid will be lighter than the outgoing model. This will help in achieving higher fuel efficiency and performance.

The new model is likely to be powered by a 2.0-litre petrol hybrid powertrain.  The company is expected to use the localised version of the new THS II (Toyota Hybrid System II). This system has a twin-motor setup calibrated to deliver high ‘step-off’ torque and better efficiency. The new Innova won’t be offered with a diesel engine. The company could also receive a 1.8-litre hybrid set-up.
