New Toyota Compact SUV To Underpin Localized Platform – Creta Fighter

It’s no secret that Maruti Suzuki and Toyota are gearing up to tap the highly-competitive mid-size SUV segment that’s currently ruled by Hyundai Creta. Both automakers will co-develop the model that will share the platform, features, components and engines. Though, their design will be different. The upcoming Maruti and Toyota mid-size SUVs will be manufactured at Toyota Bidadi based plant in Karnataka.

According to a fresh media report, Toyota will use the localized version of its TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) modular platform. The architecture will be modified to meet the market specific requirements and achieve competitive pricing. Codenamed Toyota D22, the mid-size SUV is likely to share its design and interior bits with the global-spec Toyota Corolla Cross. Upfront, it will feature the brand’s signature grille with chrome strip running across the width, split headlamps with dual LED DRLs and bumper with a large honeycomb mesh patterned air-dam. It will have squared-off wheel arches with alloys wheels.

Inside, there will be a free-standing touchscreen infotainment system with layered dashboard. The horizontally positioned AC vents placed below the touch with hazard light switch seem borrowed from the Corolla Cross. Its official details are still under the wraps. Though, the model is likely to come with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, wireless smartphone charging, connected car tech, powered ORVMs and powered driver’s seat. Rumour has it that the automaker might equip the new compact SUV with ADAS (advanced driver assist system) offering blind spot monitoring system, autonomous emergency braking, a collision warning system, adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist.

The upcoming Toyota SUV is likely to come with the hybrid powertrain featuring a petrol engine and an electric motor. There might be a 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol or a 1.4L turbo petrol motor. Both manual and automatic gearboxes will be on offer.
