The MG Comet EV is a unique and the second electric offering from the British automaker in India. The small EV comes in three variants – Pace, Play and Plush – priced at Rs 7.98 lakh, Rs 9.28 lakh and Rs 9.98 lakh respectively. Its powertrain setup consists of a 17.3kWH battery and a 42bhp, electric motor, offering a range of 230km (ARAI-certified). The carmaker aims to further expand its EV product portfolio in India with a new electric compact SUV. It will essentially be the re-badged Baojun Yep EV that recently made its debut in the Chinese market. The model is reported to come sometime in 2025.
Design, Platform
Similar to the Comet EV, the Baojun Yep underpins the Global Small Electric Vehicle (GSEV) platform. It carries boxy stance with features such as a closed-off grille, unique headlamps with Porsche-like graphics, quad-LED DLRs and a massive bumper at the front end. It has squarish wheel arches with 15-inch alloy wheels, black roof rails, small rear windows and oval-shaped taillamps.
Dimensions, Storage Space
The overall length, width and height stand at 3381mm, 1685mm and 1721mm respectively. The Yep has a 2110mm long wheelbase. You get 35-litres of storage space in the frunk and 715-litres boot space with the folded second row of seats. The roof rack, which comes as an option, offers storage space of up to 30kg.
Interior, Features
Interior of the Baojun Yep compact electric SUV is packed with several goodies. There is a three-spoke steering wheel with mounted controls and a 10.25-inch dual screen layout – one for the instrument cluster and one for the infotainment. The list also includes a rearview camera, battery temperature management system, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats and four USB ports.
The ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) tech is reserved for the top-end variant. It provides access to features such as lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, automatic parking assist and a 360 degree camera.
Range, Charging Options
Powertrain setup of the Baojun Yep compact electric SUV includes a 28.1kWh lithium-ion phosphate battery and a 68bhp, electric motor. It has an electric range of up to 303km (as per CLTC). Unlike the Comet EV, the Yep’s battery pack supports DC fast charging and it takes 35 minutes to get charged from 30-80 percent. One can also use the AC charge to juice up the battery from 20-80 percent in 8.5 hours.
