New Maruti WagonR Facelift Under Testing?

With its debut in 1999, the Maruti Suzuki WagonR has consistently been a pivotal model for the Indo-Japanese automaker, proving to be a substantial contributor to their sales volume. Over the course of 24 years, this hatchback has undergone three generational transformations and undergone several facelifts. A notable shift occurred in 2019 when it transitioned to the Heartect platform, and a minor update further refined its features in 2022.

The latest development suggests that the Maruti WagonR is ready for another facelift, as an undisguised test mule was recently observed navigating the roads. Notable changes include a distinct rear bumper design, featuring a horizontal plastic cladding insert and slightly repositioned reflectors. Although the taillamp clusters maintain a semblance to the current model, they now boast a blacked-out treatment. Anticipated upgrades extend to the front end and a set of newly-designed alloy wheels. Internally, a potential overhaul awaits, promising a host of new features that will elevate its overall product value.

Under the hood, however, no significant alterations are expected. Similar to its predecessor, the new Maruti WagonR facelift will continue to be powered by the reliable 1.0L and 1.2L petrol engines, enhanced with Dualjet, dual VVT (variable valve timing), cooled EGR (exhaust gas recirculation), and ISS (idle start-stop) technology. These features not only contribute to improved fuel efficiency but also aid in reducing emission levels. The 1.0L gasoline unit, shared with the Celerio, delivers a respectable 67bhp, while the same engine equipped with a factory-fitted CNG kit achieves 57bhp. For those opting for the higher trim, the 1.2L petrol engine delivers a robust 90bhp. Both manual and AMT gearboxes will persist as viable options. Read: New-Gen Maruti Dzire Launch Timeline

Maruti Suzuki has, notably, unveiled a prototype of India’s inaugural mass-market flex-fuel car – the WagonR. Designed to run on any ethanol-petrol blend ranging from 20 percent (E20) to 85 percent (E85) fuel, this forward-looking innovation has been developed collaboratively by Maruti Suzuki’s engineers and Suzuki Motor Corporation, Japan. The WagonR flex-fuel variant, with an eye on a 2025 rollout, underscores the brand’s commitment to pioneering sustainable automotive solutions in the Indian market.
