New Maruti Electric SUV Will Be As Big As Hyundai Creta

Maruti Suzuki’s first all-electric SUV concept (codenamed YY8) will make its debut at the 2023 Delhi Auto Expo. The production version of the EV will hit showrooms sometime in January or February 2025. The new Maruti electric SUV will be co-developed with Toyota and Toyota will also sell its re-badged version in the Indian market. The carmakers will retail it in both the domestic and global markets. Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat-based facility will serve as production hub for the new electric SUV.

In terms of dimensions, the new Maruti electric SUV will measure over 4.2 meters in length and have a wheelbase of 2700mm. That means, it will be around as big as the Hyundai Creta that’s 4300mm long. The long wheelbase will create enough cabin space and room for accommodating large battery pack. The electric SUV will be designed on the 27PL platform, which is derived from Toyota’s 40PL global architecture.

Design and styling of the upcoming Maruti electric car will be futuristic. The YY8 is likely to come with a closed-off front grille, pronounced wheel arches, alloy wheels, couple-like roofline and sharply designed rear with a short overhang. Maruti Suzuki’s futuristic design language might continue inside the cabin as well. The carmaker is likely to pack it with advanced technology.

Powertrain details of the Maruti YY8 are still under the wraps. Though, it’s reported to be offered with a 48kWh and a 59kWh battery pack. While the former will deliver a range of around 400km, the latter will promise around 500km on a single charge. The electric SUV will have LFP blade cell batteries that will be sourced from Chinese battery supplier BYD. The Blade cell technology will help the Indo-Japanese automaker to achieve optimum packaging, high range and competitive pricing. The new Maruti electric SUV could be made available with the 2WD and AWD drivetrain systems.
