New Kia Electric Car Spotted; Looks Identical To Carens?

In January 2023, Kia announced a fresh investment of Rs 2,000 crore for R&D (Research and Development), infrastructure development and manufacturing capabilities to locally produce EVs (electric vehicles) in India. The carmaker plans to launch two, new locally manufactured EVs by 2025. While the company hasn’t yet revealed details of the upcoming EVs, it’s likely to include a SUV and a MPV. Recently, a new Kia electric car was caught testing wearing camouflage in South Korea. It’s likely to be under development for the select Southeast Asian markets including India.

The camouflaged test mule managed to cover most of its design details. Though, it appears exactly similar to the Carens sold in the Indian market. One can notice its differently designed alloy wheels. Even if planned, the Kia Carens Electric is expected to receive a few EV-specific cosmetic changes at the front end including a closed-off grille, different lighting setup and air dam. The MPV’s electric iteration might also be offered in new exterior paint options.

Inside, there could be a new theme and upholstery. The feature list, however, is expected to be similar to its ICE version. The Kia Carens MPV comes with a single-pane sunroof, wireless charging, ventilated seats, 8-speaker Bose sound system, Kia Connect UI with OTA updates, air purifier, 64-colour ambient cabin lighting, leather wrapped steering wheel and more. The new Kia electric car might borrow the instrument cluster and touchscreen infotainment system from the Kia EV5.

Powertrain details of the upcoming Kia electric MPV are still under the wraps. Though, the MPV is likely to deliver a range of around 400-500km.

The second upcoming Kia electric car will be a compact SUV (Kia AY) that will sit between the Sonet and Seltos. The model is reported to be positioned as a lifestyle vehicle with SUV-ish stance, boxy and taller body built. The company will introduce Kia AY with petrol engine as well. Kia’s Anantapur facility will serve as production hub for its upcoming EVs and ICE-powered models.
