Kia Motor India currently has two SUVs in its product portfolio – Sonet and Seltos. Both models have been generating volume for the South Korean automaker in the country. According to a latest media report, the company is working on a new “compact lifestyle SUV” that will hit roads sometime in 2025. It’s expected to cost between Rs 12 lakh – Rs 24 lakh (ex-showroom). Interestingly, the new Kia compact SUV (codenamed – Kia AY) will be offered with petrol and electric powertrain options.
The petrol version of the new Kia compact SUV is likely to come with a 1.0L turbocharged petrol engine. The model will be made available with the FWD (front-wheel drive) system, similar to the Sonet sub-4 meter SUV. The report further states that the top-end electric variants might be packed with an additional electric motor fitted at the rear axle to provide 4WD (four-wheel drive) capabilities.
The Kia AY SUV will carry boxy and upright stance and have a commanding SUV-like road presence. It’s likely to be more spacious than the Sonet, thus ensuring better legroom for the rear seat passengers. Some of its design elements could be borrowed from the Kia Soul that features a sharply designed headlamps, five-spoke 17-inch wheels and wraparound taillamps. As of now, there is no information about its interior layout and features. We expect to come with features such as a touchscreen infotainment system with the latest smartphone connectivity, UVO telematics system, automatic climate control and more.
In the company product lineup, the new Kia compact SUV will sit above the Sonet and below the Seltos. It will be Made-in-India model that will be retailed in both domestic and export markets. Kia Motor India aims to produce around 1 lakh units of the Kia AY on annual basis. It’s expected that nearly 80 percent volume will come from its petrol version (including RHD units of export markets).
