BYD Seal, Atto 3 & EV6 MPV – Three EVs At Auto Expo 2023

BYD (Build Your Dreams), the Chinese EV maker has recently launched the new Atto 3 electric SUV in the Indian market. The company has also announced plans to showcase its multiple electric vehicles at the 2023 Auto Expo. Apart from the Atto 3 and the EV6 MPV, BYD will showcase the all-new Seal sedan for the first time in India at the 16th edition of Indian Auto Expo. Already on sale in Europe and China, the BYD Seal electric sedan directly rivals the popular Tesla Model 3.

This Born electric model measures 4,800mm in length, 1,875mm in width and 1,460mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,875mm. It is 106mm longer, 58mm narrower and 17mm taller than the model 3. Adding to it, the wheelbase of the sedan is 45mm longer than the Tesla’s wheelbase of 2,875mm. Based on BYD’s “ocean aesthetics” design language, the BYD Seal shares styling cues from the Ocean X concept unveiled in 2021.

In terms of styling, the BYD Seal electric sedan features a coupe-like all-glass roof, four boomerang-shaped LED DRLs, flush-fitting door handles, split headlamp setup and and LED tail-lights that stretches across the width. Inside the cabin, it gets a rotating 15.6-inch infotainment display, a 10.25-inch digital instrument console and a heads-up display. The central console houses drive selector, and controls for heated windscreen, volume control & two wireless charging pads.

The BYD Seal features Blade battery tech and is offered with two battery packs – a 61.4kWh and an 82.5kWh. The former is claimed to offer a range of 550km on the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC-cycle), while the bigger battery pack has a range of 700km on a single charge. The smaller and larger battery can be charged at rates of up to 110kW and 150kW respectively. The BYD Seal is available with a choice of single-motor and dual-motor powertrains, and the former is offered with both batteries.

The single-motor version offers 204bhp and the 0-100kmph acceleration can be achieved in 5.7 seconds. The bigger battery produces 312bhp and is capable of achieving 0-100kmph in just 5.9 seconds. The dual-motor AWD variant offers a combined power of 530bhp. It is claimed to achieve 0-100kmph acceleration in 3.8 seconds. This variant is claimed to offer a range of 650km on a single charge.

The Atto 3 electric SUV is available at a starting price of Rs 33.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The new EV is positioned above the Hyundai Kona EV and the MG ZS EV that cost between Rs 23.84 lakh – Rs 24.03 lakh and Rs 22.58 lakh – Rs 26.50 lakh respectively. It comes via SKD (semi-knocked down) route and assembled at the brand’s Sriperumbudur based plant near Chennai.

The BYD Atto 3 features a 60kWh BYD Blade battery that offers an ARAI certified range of 521km on a full charge. It features a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor that is claimed to produce 201bhp and 310Nm of torque. It is claimed to achieve 0 to 100kmph in 7.3 seconds. The battery can be charged from 0 to 80 percent in 50 minutes.

BYD E6 MPV

BYD launched the e6 MPV for private buyers in August 2023. Priced at Rs 29.15 lakh, the BYD e6 is available in two variants – GL and GLX with the latter offered with an AC fast charging option. Based on BYD’s e-platform, the electric MPV features a 71.7kWh battery pack that is coupled to a single front axle mounted electric motor that offers 95bhp and 180Nm of torque. It is claimed to offer a combined WLTC range of 415km and has a top speed of 130kmph. With fast charging, the MPV can be charged from 30 to 80 percent in 35 minutes. The MPV can be fully charged in just 90 seconds.
