New Kia Clavis SUV Testing Begins – What To Expect?

In its existing product lineup, Kia India currently offers four models – Sonet, Seltos, Carens, and EV6. The portfolio is set to expand soon with the introduction of the new-gen Carnival, EV9, and a new micro SUV, tentatively named Kia Clavis. Although specific details about the upcoming mini SUV haven’t been officially disclosed, reports suggest that it is likely to debut by the end of 2024. The prototype of the vehicle has already been spotted undergoing testing, concealed under heavy camouflage.

Spy image of the Kia Clavis reveals a tall and boxy stance, distinct from the Sonet and Seltos models. The design is expected to draw inspiration from the globally acclaimed Kia Soul. While details about the new Kia SUV remain limited, it is anticipated to be available with both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric powertrain options. The micro SUV may share the 1.0L turbo petrol engine with the Seltos, delivering 120PS of power and 172Nm of torque through a 6-speed iMT and a 7-speed DCT gearbox.

If the Kia Clavis EV is part of the plan, it is expected to offer a competitive range, possibly around 300km to 400km. Notably, its rivals, the Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter, are gearing up for electric versions. The Punch EV is scheduled to hit the roads on January 17, 2024, while the electric variant of the Exter is reportedly in the testing phase.

In response to shifting automotive trends, Kia is exploring new hybrid technology as a replacement for diesel powertrains. There are rumors suggesting that Kia might introduce strong hybrid technology to models such as the Seltos, Carens, and the new micro SUV. If these speculations hold true, the Kia Clavis could be the first Kia model to feature a hybrid powertrain.

More details on the upcoming new Kia compact SUV are expected to be revealed in near future, stay tuned to IndiaCarNews.
