New Hatchback Sales On Decline; SUVs In Demand

August 2021 car sales data reveals that the demand for entry-level, mid-sized and premium hatchbacks are at all time low. Going by the market trend, it is visible that buyers are now looking at micro SUVs and compact SUVs instead of hatchbacks. Entry-Level Hatchback Segment: Alto No.1

– It is clear that the demand for Alto is significantly higher than the competition in the entry-level car segment. However, the hatch reports a year-on-year 8 percent decline in sales in August 2021. The company sold 13,236 units in August 2021 as against 14,397 units in the same month last year.

– Maruti Suzuki S-Presso sales have increased by 36%. The company sold 7,225 units last month as compared to the 5,312 in the corresponding month 2020.

– Renault Kwid sales have been declined by 19 percent (Year-on-Year). The company sold 2,969 units in August 2020 as against 3,677 units in the same month last year. Datsun Redi-GO reported a massive decline of 94%, as it recorded a total sales of just 32 units.

– Maruti Suzuki Swift retains the top-spot in the compact hatch segment; however, it recorded a YOY decline of 16%. The company sold 12,438 units last month compared to 14,869 units in the same month last year.

– Maruti Suzuki sold 9,628 units in August 2021, recording a negative YOY growth of 30%. MSIL had delivered 13,770 units in the same month last year.

– Hyundai Grand i10 Nios reported a sales decline of 21%. Hyundai sold 8,023 units in August as against 10,190 in the same month last year.

– Tata Tiago is at the forth position with 5,658 units sold in the month of August 2021. It recorded a minimal YOY sales decline of 1%. Maruti Ignis is at 5th position with 2,053 units sold last month; recording a YOY decline of 37%.

– Hyundai Santro is at 7th with 1,731 units, while Maruti Celerio is at 8th with just 53 units. Ford Figo, Datsun GO and Mahindra KUV100 NXT failed to cross double figures.

– Maruti Suzuki Baleno is the top-selling premium hatchback of the country, beating the likes of the Hyundai i20 and the Tata Altroz. MSIL sold 15,646 units of the Baleno in August 2021 as against 10,742 units in the same month last year; recording a YOY growth of 46%.

– Hyundai sold 7,340 units of the i20, while Tata delivered 6,175 units of the Altroz hatchback last month. Toyota Glanza sales stood at 1,832, while Volkswagen sold 1,306 units of Polo hatchback in August 2021.
