MG’s Next Car Will Be Cheaper Than Hector

MG Motor India is currently gearing up to launch the Gloster premium 7-seater SUV in the first or second week of October, 2020. The carmaker says that the MG Gloster will come as an option for buyers who are planning to purchase a car between 30 lakh – 50 lakh.

Speaking to an online media publication, Rajeev Chaba, President and Managing Director at MG Motor India, has confirmed that the company aims to tap the volume segment with its next product that will arrive sometime next year. While the name of the upcoming new MG car is yet to be revealed, it’s likely to the petrol version of the MG ZS SUV.

In terms of pricing and position, the MG ZS petrol will be placed below the Hector SUV that costs from Rs 12.83 lakh (ex-showroom). The model made its first public appearance at the 2020 Auto Expo and is currently under testing in the country. At the heart of the ZS petrol could be a 1.5L engine pushing out a peak power of 112bhp and 150Nm of torque.

Globally, the SUV is being offered with 1.3L turbo petrol and 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engines making 160bhp with 230Nm and 118bhp with 150Nm respectively. The turbo-petrol motor comes with a 5-speed manual and a CVT automatic gearbox. The naturally aspirated engine is paired to a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The India-spec model is likely to be made available with manual and CVT gearbox options.

The British carmaker recently announced that it will invest an additional Rs 1,000 crores in the Indian market in the next one year. The company aims to increase localization of high-end components and production capacity at its Halol based plant in Gujarat. Currently, MG’s Halol facility has an annual production capacity of 75,000 to 80,000 units. It will be increased to 1,00,000 units annually in coming years.
