MG Motors India is all set to foray into the mid-size SUV segment that’s currently dominated by the Hyundai Creta. Called the MG Astor, the model will be the fourth product from the British carmaker in the country. It will also be the first MG to feature the IT systems enabled by Jio’s loT solutions. Reliance Jio will provide the e-SIM and loT tech for real-time infotainment and telematics. The automaker has confirmed that its upcoming SUV will be based on the CAAP (Concept of Car as a Platform).
What’s more interesting is the Astor SUV will be the most affordable MG to offer Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology that will be revealed on August 18, 2021 (i.e. tomorrow). MG is also working with several global ecosystem partners in emerging technologies including AI, Machine Learning, Blockchain and more. All these technologies will create the support system for CAAP and enable the development and implementation of services and subscriptions to serve the increasing on-demand-in-car requirements.
The MG Astor, which is the ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) version of the ZS EV, will be packed with a 1.5L, 4-cylinder mild hybrid petrol engine. The same powertrain delivers 141bhp and 240Nm of torque on the MG Hector SUV. MG’s Creta and Seltos rival will be available with the 6-speed manual and CVT automatic gearbox options.
Design and styling of the new MG SUV is similar to the ZS EV. Though, a few cosmetic changes have been made to it including the new MG One inspired front grille, newly-designed headlamps with LED DRLs, dual-tone alloy wheels, roof mounted spoiler and LED taillamps. Its interior layout and features will be similar to its electric sibling.
The MG Astor is likely to be packed with a large 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, fully digital instrument cluster with a large MID unit, i-Smart connected technology, a flat-bottom steering wheel, ADAS (advanced driver assistance system), tyre pressuring monitoring system, sunroof, automatic AC unit and more.
