Maruti Suzuki eWX EV To Rival Tata Tiago EV – Launch Details

We reported earlier that Maruti Suzuki is working on multiple EVs for the Indian market. The first Maruti electric vehicle to be launched our market is the production version of the eVX SUV in the end of 2024. The company is also working on an entry-level all-electric hatchback, which is reportedly to be launched in our market by 2026-27.

The new entry-level electric hatchback is expected to be based on the eWX concept showcased by Suzuki Motor Corporation at the Japan Mobility Show in 2023. The Maruti Suzuki eWX electric hatchback will challenge the segment-leader Tata Tiago EV. The Tiago EV is hugely popular among first time car buyers who want to opt for electric vehicles.

For people not in the know, Maruti Suzuki has been testing the Wagon R EV on the Indian roads. However, the plan dropped as MSIL did not manage to keep the cost in check. The Indo-Japanese brand has started working on an all-new, grounds-up EV architecture for compact electric vehicles codenamed K-EV that has been derived from the Toyota 40PL global platform.

MSIL has confirmed that all its electric vehicles will be based on ‘born-EV’ architecture and not ICE derived. Not just the platform, the company will aim to localise the battery pack as well. Maruti Suzuki has also joined hands with BYD for supply of blade cells for its upcoming eVX midsize electric SUV. The company has already announced an investment of over Rs 10,000 crore for localisation of electric vehicles in India. This investment will go into both the manufacturing of vehicles and localisation of battery cells. The company aims to launch around 6 electric vehicles by the end of decade.

The Suzuki eWX concept measures 3.4 meters in length, which makes it even smaller than the S-Presso on sale in our market. It measures 3395mm in length, 1475mm in width and 1620mm in height. The company did not reveal the exact specifications or battery details of the eWX; however, it is claimed to offer a driving range of 230km on a single charge.
