Maruti Suzuki aims to expand its product portfolio with several new SUVs and crossovers in coming years. The Jimny off-road SUV is one of the much-anticipated upcoming Maruti Suzuki models in the country. Speaking to PTI, Shashank Srivastava, Senior Executive Director of Sales and Marketing at Maruti Suzuki India, said that the vehicles like Jimny have less volumes, but help lifting image of an OEM and satisfy aspirations of several customers. Though, the company needs to assess component supply and its pricing ahead of its India arrival. The Indo-Japanese automaker already has dedicated assembly line for the three-door off-road SUV and export it to overseas.
If reports are to be believed, Maruti Suzuki is planning to bring in 5-door or long-wheelbase version (LWB) version of the Jimny. The model has been caught on camera during its test rounds. The 5-door Maruti Jimny measures 3850mm in length, 1645mm in width and 1730mm in height with a wheelbase of 2550mm. This makes it around 300mm longer than the globally sold 3-door Jimny. The 5-door Maruti Jimny could be offered with a 1.5L K15B petrol engine that’s good enough for 102bhp and 138Nm. The same motor powers the Vitara Brezza, S-Cross, Ertiga and Ciaz. The gasoline unit has been boasted with 12V SHVS mild hybrid technology. The off-road SUV might come with the 5-speed manual and 4-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox options.
Prices of the new Maruti Jimny are likely to start around Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom). In terms of size, it won’t have any direct rival in India. Though, it will face challenge from cars like Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha.
