Maruti Jimny 5-Door Version To Launch By 2022-23; 3-Door Cancelled

It was speculated that Maruti Suzuki will showcase the 3-door version of the Jimny SUV at Nexa showrooms. The SUV was reportedly to be displayed to gauge customer response, which also suggested that Maruti is planning to launch the Jimny in India. However, a new media report claims that all speculations around the Jimny are false, and the 3-door Jimny won’t be introduced in our market.

The report further claims that Maruti Suzuki is working on the 5-door version of the Jimny. The new model is expected to be launched by 2022 or 2023. MSIL is currently producing 1,200-1,500 units of the 3-door Jimny for export markets only. The 5-door Jimny could be branded as the new Gypsy for the Indian market.

Suzuki Jimny SUV 5-door

Maruti Suzuki had showcased the 3-door Jimny at the 2020 Auto Expo. The SUV is based on the ladder-on-frame chassis and features 4WD system as standard. It is powered by a 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine that produces 100bhp and 130Nm of torque. Transmission choices include a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed torque convertor automatic.

The 5-door Maruti Suzuki Jimny will ride on longer wheelbase, which should help MSIL to create more space inside the cabin. It will have front-facing second row of seats, which is missing in the 3-door model. The SUV is expected to be based on the Jimny Sierra, which is slightly bigger than the standard model. The standard Jimny measures 3,395mm in length, 1,475mm in width, and 1,725mm in height, and offers a ground clearance of 205. On the other hand, the Jimny Sierra is 3,550mm long, 1,645mm wide and 1,730mm tall, and has a ground clearance of 210mm. Both models get the same wheelbase of 2,250mm.

The 5-Door Jimny is expected to measure around 3.9 meters in length, which is 300-350mm longer than the 3-door model. The wheelbase is expected to be increased by 250mm. The SUV will be equipped with modern features such as touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, automatic AC, keyless entry, engine start-stop button, automatic headlamps, ESP, forward braking assist, hill start assist, etc.
