Maruti Suzuki is all set to introduce the new Jimny lifestyle SUV in the Indian market in 2023. Instead of the 3-door model, the India-spec Maruti Suzuki Jimny will be a 5-door model that has already been spotted testing multiple times. It will be the brand’s first ladder-frame SUV since the Gypsy.
The Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5 Door has also been caught doing high-altitude tests in Ladakh. The company is testing the new SUV on various parameters like engine component and off-road performance in extreme weather conditions. The new model will be positioned against the likes of the Mahindra Thar and the Force Gurkha.
Auto Expo 2023 Debut
– The new Suzuki Jimny 5 door will make global debut at the 2023 Auto Expo in January. Production of the SUV is expected to commence in early next year, while India launch is expected in the second quarter of 2023. The new model will be sold via Maruti’s NEXA premium dealership network. Before new Jimny, MSIL will launch the new Baleno based SUV Coupe – codenamed YTB in early 2023 – around January-February.
Engine Specs
MSIL is currently producing the Jimny 3-door for export markets. It is fitted with an older 1.5-litre K15B engine with 5MT & 4-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox. The 5-door Maruti Suzuki Jimny will be powered by a new 1.5-litre K15C naturally-aspirated petrol with a mild hybrid set-up. This engine is capable of producing 101bhp and 137Nm of torque. This engine currently powers the Ertiga, XL6, the new Brezza and the Grand Vitara. Transmission choices will include a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic.
AllGrip AWD System
The new Jimny 5 door will come fitted with Suzuki’s AllGrip Pro AWD setup, which is the most capable version of Suzuki’s AllGrip tech. We have recently seen the AllGrip AWD setup in the new Maruti Grand Vitara; however, this setup misses out on a low-ratio gear. The AllGrip Pro AWD setup comes with a low-ratio gear that multiplies engine torque and limits speeds, and improves the off-road driving. Driver can switch between two-wheel-drive high (2H) and four-wheel-drive high (4H) for off-road conditions. For extreme off-road conditions, the SUV will have four-wheel-drive low (4L).
Dimensions & Top Changes
The new Jimny lifestyle SUV will be based on the 3-door Jimny Sierra. Leaked documents reveal that the new lifestyle SUV will measure 3,850mm in length, 1,645mm in width and 1,730mm in height. The vehicle will ride on 2,550mm long wheelbase, which should allow Suzuki engineers to create more space for the backseat passengers. Compared to the Sierra, the 5-door Jimny will have 300mm longer wheelbase and the overall length will be increased by 300mm. The SUV will have a ground clearance of 210mm and is reportedly to have a kerb weight of 1,190kg that is 100kgs higher than the 3-door Sierra.
The spy images also reveal that the Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5 door will come with design changes and an upgraded cabin. It will have an all-new front fascia with new Suzuki’s signature grille and revised headlamps, and new bumper. In terms of features, the 5-door Jimny is expected to get a larger 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system instead of a 7-inch unit. The SUV is also expected to receive some modern features in-line with new Brezza and the Grand Vitara.
