Recently, we have reported that the Indo-Japanese carmaker is considering the 5-door Jimny SUV for the Indian market. The Maruti Jimny 5-door (codenamed YWD) is reported to hit our shores by July 2022. According to a fresh media report, the company might also introduce the Jimny 3-door version the second half of 2021 (possibly near around Diwali season). The carmaker has already started its exports to Middle East, Latin America and Africa from its Gurugram based manufacturing facility.
While its 5-door version will be more practical for day-to-day commuting purposes, the 3-door will be introduced as a lifestyle product to serve a niche segment. The carmaker showcased the fourth-generation, 3-door Jimny at the last year’s Auto Expo. Maruti’s new lightweight and compact off-road SUV will be put up against the Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha.
The Maruti Jimny has body-on-frame construction and comes with Suzuki’s K15B 1.5L petrol engine. It’s the same powertrain that does duty in the Ciaz, Vitara Brezza, XL6 and Ertiga. The compact off-road SUV can be had with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed torque convertor automatic transmission. Suzuki’s AllGrip 4X4 drivetrain system with a low range transfer case further enhances its off-road capabilities. In Japan, the SUV is also available with a 660cc turbocharged petrol engine.
The Jimny had received 3-star safety rating in Euro NCAP cash tests. It scored 73 percent in adult occupancy, 84 percent for child occupancy, 52 percent for vulnerable road users and 50 percent for safety assist systems. The safety kit of the Euro-spec model includes autonomous emergency braking (AEB), 6 airbags, a lane assist system, Isofix child seat mounts for the rear seats and a seat belt reminder.
