Mahindra’s Maruti Jimny Rival SUV – Exterior, Interior Details

Mahindra & Mahindra has been testing the 5-door Thar for quite sometime now. The company hasn’t yet revealed its launch timeline, but once launched it will go up against the Maruti Jimny 5-door SUV. The latter one is set to go on sale in May 2023. While we have seen ‘N’ number of spy images and videos of the 5-door Mahindra Thar, the latest set reveal that it could be offered with the 2WD system along with the 4X4 layout.

Engine, Gearbox Options

For power, the 5-door Thar will use the same 2.2L mHawk diesel and 2.0L mStallion petrol engines.  However, the power and torque figures could be different. In their existing form, the oil burner delivers power worth 132bhp and 300Nm of torque and the gasoline unit makes 152bhp with 300Nm (MT)/320Nm (AT). Both motors could be offered with manual and automatic gearbox options. Similar to the 3-door Thar, the 5-door Mahindra Thar 4X4 might get a manual-shift transfer case with a low ratio.

5-Door Mahindra Thar Launch

Exterior Design

Visually, the Mahindra Thar 5-door will appear similar to its 3-door version. Though, some of its body panels will be different. It will surely be longer, wider and more spacious than the existing one. The spy images reveal that it will feature pronounced wheel arches, squarish LED taillamps, a tailgate mounted spare wheel and a high-mounted stop lamp.

Interior, Features, Seating Arrangement

With longer wheelbase (around 300mm), the 5-door Mahindra Thar will ensure more cabin space than its 3-door version. It might measure 3985mm in length. The spotted test mule feature two individual seats at the rear as we have seen in the 3-door model. Though, the final version is likely to come with a bench seat.

5-Door Thar

Compared to the standard model, the 5-door Thar will offer more boot space. In terms of features, there could be the updated touchscreen infotainment system with the latest smartphone connectivity, front armrest, adjustable front seats, power windows, power steering, multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors with a display, central locking, rear defogger and more goodies.
