The new-generation Mahindra Thar, that recently made its debut, has created a buzz among enthusiasts. The SUV’s new model looks more rugged and comes with upmarket interior, new engines and improved off-road capabilities. Its 3-door version is slated to hit roads on coming 2nd October.
A latest media report claims that the home-grown carmaker is also considering the 5-door Thar for the Indian market. Expected to launch in coming years, the Mahindra Thar 5-door variant will be more practical for day-to-day driving purpose. As of now, details of the 5-door Thar are not available.
Based on the Gen3 chassis, the 2020 Mahindra Thar will be offered with two engine options – a new 2.0L mStallion petrol and a 2.2L mHawk diesel. While the gasoline motor is good enough for 150bhp and 320Nm, the oil burner makes 130bhp with 320Nm. The off-road SUV can be had either with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic unit. Mahindra says that the new Thar has an unladen ground clearance of 226mm and a maximum water wading depth of 650mm. Its approach, departure and ramp up angles stand at 42 degrees, 37 degrees and 27 degrees respectively. Suspension setup of the SUV includes independent front and multi-link rear unit. The Thar is the first vehicle in its category to feature electromechanical driveline disconnect and brake lock differential. Furthermore, the off-road SUV runs on the 255/65 R18 terrain tyres, which are largest in the segment.
The 2020 Mahindra Thar has witnessed significant changes inside and out. The list includes a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, coloured MID for instrument cluster, cruise control, steering mounted controls, forward facing rear bench seat with 50:50 split folding function, a factory-fitted hard top along with an optional soft-top, electronic stability programe, hill start and descent assist and more.
