Mahindra Thar is one of the top-selling SUVs from the home-grown automaker in India. In the month of April 2023, the company is offering attractive discount on the Thar 4X4 version. Buyers can avail a cash discount of up to Rs 40,000 on the petrol and diesel variants of the Thar 4WD (four-wheel drive). The SUV model lineup comes in two trims, namely, AX (O) and LX. Currently, it’s available with three powertrain options – a 1.5L diesel with a 6-speed manual gearbox and RWD, a 2.2L diesel with MT and AT gearboxes and only 4WD system and a 2.0L petrol with both MT and AT transmissions and 4WD and RWD options.
While the 1.5L diesel and 2.2L diesel engines make a top power of 118bhp with 300Nm and 130bhp with 300Nm, the gasoline unit delivers 152bhp with 300Nm. The Mahindra Thar 4X4 version comes with an electronic brake locking differential that ensures better grip in low traction roads.
Reports suggest that the carmaker will soon introduce new entry-level 4X4 variant that will be positioned below the AX (O) trim. It can be had with either a 2.0L petrol or a 2.2L diesel engine. The new Thar 4X4 entry-level variant will lose some features from AX (O) trim. It will be a four-seater model with forward facing seats.
In other updates, Mahindra & Mahindra is testing the 5-door Thar that’s likely to debut by the end of 2023 or early 2024. The model will have 300mm longer wheelbase than the existing Thar. In fact, its body panels will be new and it might offer better stability with increased wheelbase-to-track ratio. The 5-door Mahindra Thar will have more cabin space, especially for the second row occupants. It might get an updated infotainment system, a sunglass holder and front centre armrest. It will take directly on the Maruti Suzuki Jimny that’s due for May 2023.
