The second-generation Mahindra Thar recently achieved 1 lakh production milestone within 2.5 years of its market launch. In January 2023, the carmaker introduced its new RWD (rear-wheel drive) variants and a 1.5L diesel engine. In order to further boost its sales, the company will bring in its new 4X4 base variant and new 4X4 White colour models. Mahindra & Mahindra has also planned the Thar 5-door version that’s expected to debut towards the end of 2023 or early 2024. Its exact launch timeline is yet to be revealed by the carmaker.
The 5-door Mahindra Thar will have 300mm longer wheelbase than its 3-door model. It’s likely to have new body panels along with the increased width between the wheels for better wheelbase-to-track ratio. Unlike the 3-door version, the Thar 5-door will offer an extra rear door for the middle-row passengers. Interior layout will be similar to the existing model. The SUV will come with the three seat bench layout in the middle row and provide bigger boot space.
Talking about the engine, the Mahindra Thar 5-door is expected to share its powertrains with the Scorpio N. That means, it will be more powerful than the 3-door Thar. Under the hood, it’s likely to feature a 2.0L turbo petrol and a 2.2L turbo diesel engine, making 200bhp with 370-380Nm and 172bhp with 370Nm/ 130bhp/300Nm respectively. It can be had with either a manual or an automatic gearbox. Just so you know, the Thar 3-door comes with the 132bhp, 2.2L turbo diesel and 152bhp, 2.0L petrol engine options.
Besides engines, the 5-door Mahindra Thar will source the ladder-on-frame chassis from the Scropio N. Though, it will be modified to accommodate the smaller lifestyle SUV. The model will come with the 4X4 drivertrain system and a manual-shift transfer case with a low ratio. It will also be available with the 4X2/RWD system.
