Kia Sonet Launched; Undercuts Maruti Vitara Brezza

The long wait for the Kia Sonet subcompact SUV is finally over, as the South Korean carmaker has launched the model in the country. The model lineup comes in two trims – Tech Line and GT Line – priced between Rs 6.71 lakh and Rs 11.99 lakh. While prices of the petrol variants start from Rs 6.71 lakh and go up to Rs 11.99 lakh, the diesel models are available in the price range of Rs 8.05 lakh – Rs 11.99 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom. The carmaker is quite sure about the Sonet’s success and aims to sell 1,00,000 units in the first year.

Sonet Engines, Gearboxes

Interestingly, the Sonet shares its powertrains with its arch rival and cousin sibling – Hyundai Venue. Though, it comes with the diesel automatic combination. The new Kia compact SUV can be had with three engines – 1.2L naturally aspirated petrol (82bhp/113Nm), 1.0L turbo petrol (118bhp/172Nm) and 1.5L turbo diesel (99bhp with172Nm and 113bhp with 245Nm). While the 1.2L gasoline unit is paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox, the turbo petrol motor is available with 7-speed dual-clutch automatic and iMT (Intelligent Manual Transmission) gearbox options. The oil burner can be had either with a 6-speed manual or an automatic gearbox.

Kia claims that the 1.2L petrol motor delivers fuel economy of 18.4kmpl. It can do 0 to 100kmph in 13.3 seconds. While the turbo petrol unit promises 18.2kmpl (iMT) and 18.3kmpl (DCT), the diesel engine returns 19kmpl (AT) and 24.1kmpl (MT). The Sonet’s turbo petrol with iMT and DCT gearbox accelerates 0-100kmph in 12.3 seconds and 11.3 seconds respectively. The diesel model can achieve 100kmph from standstill in 11.8 seconds (AT) – 12.3 seconds (MT).

Sonet Colours, Design

The new Kia compact SUV has been offered in a choice of 8 monotone and 3 dual-tone colour options that vary variant-wise. At the front, the model features the brand’s signature Tiger nose grille with chrome finished lower edge, slim LED headlamps with ‘heartbeat’ DRLs, a pronounced bumper and faux silver skid plates.

The SUV comes fitted with 17-inch alloy wheels along with features such as LED taillamps connected by a reflector strip, rear bumper with a silver finish faux skid plate and faux twin exhaust trims. Kia has equipped the all-new Sonet compact SUV with lots of segment-first features including a 10.25-inch HD infotainment display with UVO connected car technology, ventilated front seats and premium Bose 7 Speaker sound system with mood lights. It also gets the Smart Pure Air Purifier with claimed to the first-ever virus protection system.

The list of features also includes cooled wireless phone charging, auto climate control, auto headlamps, a sunroof and many more. On the safety front, the new Kia compact SUV offers front and rear parking sensors, 6 airbags, ABS (anti-lock braking system) with EBD (electronic brake-force distribution), VSM (vehicle stability management) a tyre-pressure monitor, ESC (electronic stability control), HAC (hill assist control), and brake assist.
