Kia Sonet CNG Launching Soon – Brezza CNG Rival

Korean automaker Kia is preparing to launch the CNG version of the Sonet compact SUV in the country in 2023. The new Kia Sonet CNG is expected to be launched sometime in the second quarter of 2023, after the introduction of BSVI Phase 2. Not just Sonet, Kia is also testing the CNG versions of the Carens MPV and the Seltos SUV on the Indian roads.

The Kia Sonet CNG has been spotted testing in Pune. The spotted model had a sticker reading “On Test By ARAI”. The CNG version will be offered on the existing Sonet on sale in our market. Also visible is the emission testing equipment placed in Sonet’s boot. It is expected that the Sonet CNG will be offered with the 1.0L turbo petrol engine. The company is testing the X-Line variant of the Sonet CNG.

Kia Sonet CNG Spied

The Kia Sonet CNG will rival the upcoming Brezza CNG and the Nexon CNG. Maruti Suzuki had showcased the CNG version of the Brezza SUV at the 2023 Auto Expo. On the other hand, the Nexon CNG has been spotted testing multiple times on the Indian roads. Tata Motors had also showcased the Punch micro SUV and the Altroz with the CNG kit at the 2023 Auto Expo. Both models are fitted with twin-cylinder CNG system.

It is expected that the CNG version of the Sonet will cost around Rs 1 lakh more than the regular petrol version. The regular Kia Sonet X-Line is powered by a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine that produces 118bhp and 172Nm of torque. Expect a significant drop in power and torque when Sonet runs in CNG mode.

The CNG version is most likely to be offered in a single manual gearbox option, while the petrol X-Line also has a 7-speed DCT option.  The small SUV is also available with a 1.2L 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol and a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine.
