Kia Clavis Could Be 1st Kia in India To Get Strong Hybrid Tech

Kia Motors has unveiled a compelling vision for the Indian market, signaling a comprehensive overhaul of its model lineup and an expansion of its product portfolio in the upcoming years. Building on the success of the Seltos mid-size SUV, which has already undergone a mid-life update, the Sonet facelift is set to grace showrooms in January 2024. The strategic roadmap extends to the introduction of the new-generation Kia Carnival and the Kia EV9 electric SUV slated for the next year, in addition to a mass-market electric vehicle akin to the Hyundai Exter. Notably, the company has recently secured the trademark for the name ‘Kia Clavis’ in India, earmarking it for deployment in the brand’s upcoming electric micro SUV.

Media reports hint at Kia’s exploration of new hybrid technology as a successor to conventional diesel powertrains. Despite the surge in demand for diesel vehicles, constituting 40 percent of the brand’s total sales, Kia remains committed to offering diesel models in accordance with prevailing regulations.

Kia Soul India Launch

On a global scale, the South Korean automaker has already established a robust presence in the hybrid segment, boasting strong hybrid vehicles like the K8 sedan, Niro crossover, Carnival MPV, and the Sorento and Sportage SUVs. These vehicles feature a 1.6L direct-injection turbocharged petrol engine coupled with an electric motor drawing power from a compact battery.

Should Kia decide to introduce its formidable hybrid technology in the Indian market, a critical aspect would be enhancing cost-efficiency through heightened localization. Reports suggest that pioneering the adoption of strong hybrid tech in India could involve the Seltos, Carens, and a new sub-4 metre model.

Anticipated to lead this charge is the Kia Clavis (codenamed – AY), positioned as the maiden Kia model in India to offer the robust hybrid powertrain option. The electric micro SUV, possibly featuring the Seltos’ 1.0L turbo petrol engine, is also expected to share the spotlight. Drawing inspiration from the design ethos of the Kia Soul, the Kia Clavis is projected to embody a distinctive tall and boxy stance.
