Kia Carens MPV Bags 3 Star Crash Test Rating – Global NCAP

In the latest round of crash test under SaferCarsForIndia campaign, the Kia Carens has scored 3 star rating for both adult and child occupant protection by the Global New Cr Assessment Program (GNCAP). The base variant of the Kia Carens was tested by GNCAP. It was equipped with six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), seatbelt pretensioners, ABS with EBD, all wheel disc brakes & tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS).

Kia Carens – Adult & Child Protection

The Kia Carens has scored 9.30 points out of a total of 17 in adult occupant protection. The GNCAP claims that the Carens’ platform and footwell area were found unstable, and the bodyshell was not capable of ‘withstanding further loadings’. The head and neck protection were found good, while driver’s chest protection was rated marginal. The report states that the front occupant knee protection was marginal.

The Kia Carens secured a total of 30.99 points out of a possible 49 points in child occupant protection. The report stated that the Carens gets ISOFIX mounting points & child restraint systems, which are well marked. The Carens offered limited protection to the 3-year old dummy placed in a forward-facing child seat. The protection was rated good for the 1.5 year old dummy placed in rear facing child seats.

Due to lap belt in the rear centre seat, the Carens missed crucial points. The Kia Carens successfully passed the side impact test, as it comes with two side body and head protection airbags.

Alejandro Furas, Secretary General of Global NCAP said, “Global NCAP welcomes Kia’s decision to make six airbags a standard fit in the Carens ahead of a regulatory requirement. However, we expected a better performance from this model. It remains a cause for concern that global car brands such as Kia, that normally achieve 5-star ratings in other markets, are still not reaching this level in India.

Carens Scored Better Than Seltos

The Kia Seltos had scored a 3-star crash test rating at GNCAP. The Carens has scored 9.30 points in adult occupant protection as compared to the Seltos’ 8.03 points. The 3-row MPV has secured 3 star safety rating with 30.99 points for child occupant protection. On the other hand, the Kia Seltos gets 2 stars and 15-points in child occupant protection.
