Hyundai & Kia Cars Crash Test Safety Ratings – Creta, Seltos, i20

In the past couple of years, car buyers are now looking for safer cars. This is evident from the significant rise in sales of Tata Motors and Mahindra cars. On the flip side, Hyundai Group and Maruti Suzuki are facing tough times due to low scores in GNCAP crash tests. In this article, we talk about the Global NCAP crash test ratings of Hyundai and Kia Cars. 

Kia Carens – 3 Stars

Kia Carens has secured 3 star rating for both adult and child occupant protection in the crash test under safercarsforIndia campaign by the GNCAP. The tested model was equipped with six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), seatbelt pretensioners, ABS with EBD, all wheel disc brakes & tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS).

The Carens scored 9.30 points out of possible 17 in adult protection in adult occupant protection. The structure and footwell area were rated as unstable, and the bodyshell was not capable of ‘withstanding further loadings.’ Driver’s chest and knee protection were rated marginal. The Kia Carens secured a total of 30.99 points out of a possible 49 points in child occupant protection. Due to lap belt in the rear centre seat, the Carens missed crucial points. The Kia Carens successfully passed the side impact test, as it comes with two side body and head protection airbags.

Hyundai Creta – 3 Stars

In the frontal offset test at 64kmph, the Hyundai Creta scored a 3 star rating for adult protection. It secured 8 points out of a maximum of 17 points. The body shell was found unstable and not capable of withstanding further loadings. Adding to it, th car’s footrest was also found unstable.

The SUV offers adequate and good head protection for driver and co-driver. The neck protection is good for both front occupants, while the chest and knee protection was marginal for the driver. The SUV scored 3-star rating for child occupant protection.  It scores 28.29 points out of a maximum 49.

Kia Seltos – 3 Stars

In the crash test under #SaferCarsForIndia campaign, the Global NCAP has awarded a 3 star safety rating for adult occupancy to the Made-in-India Kia Seltos. It received 2 star safety rating for child protection. The body shell of the compact SUV is rated as unstable. The driver’s legs and feet showed injury due to an unstable footwelll. The SUV provides adequate head protection, while the child occupant protection was rated poor.

Hyundai i20 – 3 Stars

The 3rd gen Hyundai i20 hatchback also scored 3 star safety rating with 8.84 points out of a total of 17 points. The bodyshell and footwell area were found unstable and not capable of withstanding further loads. The hatchback offers weak protection to the driver’s chest. It offers adequate protection to head and neck of front passenger and driver. The hatchback scored 36.89 points out of 49 in the child occupancy test.

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios – 2 Stars

The Grand i10 Nios hatchback scored 2 stars for adult occupant safety and 2 stars for child protection safety at the Global NCAP crash tests. The tested model was equipped with dual front airbags, seatbelt reminder, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, speed alert system and engine immobilizer safety fitments. The footwell area and body shell of the hatchback were rated unstable.

The hatchback offers good protection to head and neck and adequate protection to the chest area. It doesn’t offer standard ISOFIX child mount seat and 3-point seatbelts for all occupants. Due to lap belts in the middle position, it’s impossible to install the child restraint system properly and safely.

Hyundai Santro – 2 Stars

In the Global NCAP crash test, the Hyundai Santro has scored 2 star rating in the Adult and Child Protection. The tested model was equipped with driver airbag only. The structure of the Hyundai Santro was rated as unstable as well as the footwell area. It showed good head and neck protection for the driver and passenger. However, the hatchback offers weak and marginal protection for the driver’s and passenger’s chest protection respectively.
