The second-generation Jeep Renegade, the compact SUV from the American automaker, is likely to make its global debut sometime next year. While there is no official word about its Indian launch, reports suggest that it might hit our shores in 2022. Even if India is on the launch radar, the new premium compact SUV from Jeep will be put up against the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Renault Duster and Nissan Kicks. Its prices are expected to fall in the range of Rs 12 lakh – Rs 18 lakh (ex-showroom).
Recently, a test mule of the SUV was spotted testing near Udipi on the Goa-Mangalore highway. The carmaker might be testing different aspects of the vehicle such as engine, suspension or braking system. The heavily camouflaged test mule managed to cover most of its design details. Though, one can notice Jeep’s signature seven-slat grille flanked by round headlamps. Styling bits such as 17-inch alloy wheels, squared wheel arches and straight beltline are similar to its Europe-spec model. The LED taillamps and rear section design also looks familiar.
Jeep India is planning to expand its product portfolio with three new SUVs including a sub-4-meter compact SUV, a 7-seater premium SUV and the facelifted Compass. The new Jeep subcompact SUV is likely to carry boxy silhouette and design bits inspired by the upcoming new-generation Renegade. It will be based on the CMF modular platform that’s compatible to different body style and powertrains including petrol, diesel, electric and hybrid.
It would be quite early to comment on its engine setup. If reports are to be believed, the new Jeep subcompact SUV could be offered with multiple engine options including electric powertrain. The carmaker might use the detuned version of the 1.3L turbo petrol motor. The SUV is reported to come with the 4WD (four-wheel-drive) system. Production of the upcoming Jeep sub-4-meter SUV will take place at the FCA’s Ranjangaon based plant. It’s estimated to cost around Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom).
