Hyundai Staria Trademarked In India – New Compact MPV?

We reported earlier that Hyundai has trademarked the Staria nameplate in Philippines. Now, the Korean automaker has filed a trademark for the name “Staria” in India. The name was filed under the Automobiles, Vans, Trucks, Electric Vehicles and Hybrid Vehicles category. It is reported that the new name could be used for an all-new MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle).

We informed you earlier that Hyundai is readying an all-new MPV for the Indian market. This MPV is also expected to be launched in growing markets including Indonesia and Brasil. The Hyundai Staria is expected to be the name for the MPV, which will be positioned against the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and the Mahindra Marazzo.

In terms of pricing, the upcoming Hyundai MPV will sit above the Ertiga. It will be based on the Creta’s platform, which is compatible enough to accommodate a 7-seater MPV and different engine options. In fact, Hyundai is also testing the 7-seater Creta SUV in India. The 7-seater Creta will ride on 20mm longer wheelbase, which could be used for the MPV.

The upcoming Hyundai MPV will share most of the interior features with the Creta SUV. It will have a large touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, Hyundai BlueLink, digital instrument console, cruise control, automatic AC, USB ports for second row occupants, wireless charger, etc.

The new MPV is likely to be offered with 2 engine options – a 1.5-litre petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel. While the former is good for 113bhp and 145Nm, the oil burner produces 113bhp and 250Nm of torque. Both manual and automatic gearbox options will be on offer.

Hyundai will also launch the AX1 micro SUV and the 7-seater Creta in India in 2021. While the AX1 will be positioned against the Tata HBX and the Maruti Ignis, the 7-seater Creta will lock horns with MG Hector Plus and the Tata Gravitas.
